SHARING THE GIFT OF SONG

Marin-based Bread & Roses Presents presented 11 shows on Dec. 12, the most the organization has ever produced in one day! From morning until night, volunteers performed in facilities around the Bay Area, sharing joy with those who are isolated and otherwise don’t have access to the performing arts. Miracle Mule (above) performed at COTS Mary Isaak Center in Petaluma. The band shared “It was an honor to be part of Bread & Roses’ history-making day and a pleasure to play our swampy-tonk music for the good folks at the Mary Isaak Center.

Bread & Roses Presents believes in the healing power of music and finds that live performances are most appreciated during the holidays when some isolated or underserved people might feel lonely. The goal of the 11 shows in one day was to share joy and holiday spirit with people of all ages.  Singer-songwriter Nancy Cassidy (kneeling with children) posed with staff and kids at North Bay Children’s Center in Novato after a performance.

Singer-musician-teacher Keta Bill shared her music with young people at Fairfax/San Anselmo Children’s Center in Fairfax.

Musician-teacher Kurt Huget performed at Homeward Bound’s Mill Street Center emergency shelter in San Rafael. Volunteer host Gelen Barras shared this moment: “The highlight of the night was when one of the young homeless residents brought out his fiddle and played a couple of songs with Kurt. It was inspiring to see how the acknowledgment for his amazing talent with the fiddle lifted his spirit and that of everyone in attendance.”  -Photos courtesy of Bread & Roses Presents

Homeward Bound of Marin, in partnership with St. Patrick’s Church, has turned a former convent into affordable housing for 12 seniors who are transitioning out of homelessness in Marin County. The organization welcomed in neighbors and friends to see the new senior housing facility at 127 King Street in Larkspur on Dec. 13. With community support, Homeward Bound completed $1.3 million in renovations, including a new roof, new windows, remodeled kitchen and upgrades for bathrooms and doorways to accommodate wheelchair access. The home includes several communal rooms, including the former chapel (above, left) and a new living room-dining room area. Homeward Bound of Marin board members (left to right) Tony Nethercutt, Marion Weinreb and Bob Puett, joined other board members and staff in giving tours of the new facility.             -Photos courtesy of Homeward Bound of Marin
