COVID-19 IMPACTS NONPROFITS

The SF-Marin Food Bank is still fully operational  during the COVID-19 health crisis and continues to distribute food to the most vulnerable people in the community.  The food bank is working with San Francisco and Marin school districts to host pop-up food pantries at schools that are offering to-go meals for students. When students and parents pick up their breakfast and lunch, they will also be able to get pre-bagged groceries to take home.  To protect the health of volunteers and staff, changes have been made to the warehouse volunteer program, reducing the number of volunteers at each shift and cutting non-essential projects. To donate online or get updated information about volunteering, go to sfmfoodbank.org.  -Photos courtesy of SF-Marin Food Bank

For 35 years, Schurig Center for Brain Injury Recovery has been Marin’s only nonprofit providing support services for people with an acquired brain injury, such as TBI, concussion, or stroke. The center is facing a devastating loss of funds due to the forced cancellation of its annual major fundraiser and loss of fee revenue for on-site services. With community support, they hope to avoid major reductions in services, or total closure. While currently unable to see clients on-site, Schurig Center is working remotely to assess clients’ needs and identify new ways to ensure their well-being. Schurig’s clients include seniors, low income, people with weakened immune systems, those who live alone, and those who may find it difficult to get groceries and other essentials due to disabilities caused by their injury. Community Action Marin continues to meet the needs of Marin families. Its home office in San Rafael will continue to provide client intake over the phone at (415) 526-7500, as well as safety net services such as rental assistance, utility assistance and emergency food boxes. Community Action Marin’s central kitchen team continues to provide healthy lunches to Marin families in need.
