MARIN CHARITABLE DISTRIBUTES $174,000

Marin Charitable, an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization established in 1961, held a ceremony at Unity in Marin in Novato on Jan. 24 to distribute a total of $174,000 to 53 local groups that support education and enrichment for Marin children who have limited opportunities. Pictured above are representatives from the organizations that received grants for their work in the community this past year.

What sets Marin Charitable apart from other granting organizations is the vetting process, which includes a perusal of written proposals and site visits to the requesting organizations. These visits, during which grants committee members have the opportunity to meet staff and discuss their program in depth, play a big part in making sure the funds go to those organizations making a real difference in the lives of at-risk children. The organization holds at least three major fundraising events a year, accepts additional donations from individuals, businesses and foundations and donates 100 percent of proceeds to local organizations. Marin Charitable Association began 57 years ago as a group of Marin General Hospital volunteers who raised money to support the cardiac care unit. Three years later, the group changed to focus on Marin children and teens. Pictured above is Ted Smith, founder and president of Kids Cooking for Life, receives an award from Jennifer Forbeck.

The ceremony offers nonprofit leaders the opportunity to get to know one another and programs offered in Marin with the intent to help motivate conversations and cross collaboration of services to address crucial issues facing  young people in a rapidly changing world.
