Legal Aid of Marin held its virtual fundraiser, “Jam for Justice,” on June 18, raising more than $130,000 for services that support the County’s most vulnerable residents. Since shelter in place orders started, Legal Aid of Marin staff have continued delivering accurate information, in Spanish and English, via social media, webinars and flyer drops, to frightened, out-of-work tenants in need of answers as to how to protect the roof over their heads while obeying County orders to stay home. Brianna Romero is a Girl Scout who has been bringing lunch for the 60 residents at Warner Creek Senior Housing in Novato regularly since shelter in place orders started. Her first delivery also included a fleece throw blanket for each senior. She kept fundraising so she could continue her donation efforts. Homeward Bound of Marin coordinates services for residents at Warner Creek, which is managed by Eden Housing. Enriching Lives through Music, a Canal neighborhood based music program serving more than 150 primarily Latinx youth with full childhood, tuition-free instrumental music education, was selected as one of 32 programs from over 500 applicants from across the country to receive a $50,000 COVID-19 Community Response Fund Grant awarded by The Lewis Prize for Music. The organization was recognized for its remote academic tutoring program and its partnership with the Agricultural Institute of Marin to provide weekly bounty boxes of farmers’ market produce to families. It also launched a successful GoFundMe campaign which distributed over $45,000 in cash grants to program families to pay for essential needs.
