Partnership gives handmade pillowcases to children mourning loss

For more than 10 years, the Mt. Tam Quilt Guild and By the Bay Health (formerly Hospice By the Bay) have partnered to make bereavement camp easier for young campers. Held annually the first weekend in August, By the Bay Camp hosts grieving children and teens at no cost who have experienced a loss of a parent, sibling or significant person in their lives.

“Young people experience loss differently than adults,” said Deborah Schwing, By the Bay Health director of Bereavement Services and camp director. “Trust-building activities and age-based support groups help to ease their loss.”

Each year, Mt. Tam Quilt Guild donates an average of 60 handmade pillowcases to the campers that serve as a transitional item from camp to home.

“As part of our mission, Mt. Tam Quilt Guild makes and donates quilts to nonprofit agencies in Marin. Being a part of healing for the campers is a privilege our guild treasures,” said Kathy Norwood of the Mt. Tam Quilt Guild.
