Marin Mobile Care, Marin County’s only provider that operates mobile showers and restrooms serving multiple communities by providing basic hygiene at encampments, churches, medical facilities and other places in need, has a new home in Fairfax.
“The showers had been offered at Fairfax Community Church but weren’t getting much use,” said Margaret Miles, Fairfax Library branch manager. “I was happy to offer our rear parking lot on Thursday afternoons.”
Fairfax Town Manager Heather Abrams and Fairfax Library staff have promoted the service via flyers and word of mouth. Just three weeks into its new location, the Marin Mobile Care trailer was greeted with a short line as it pulled in.
Launched in 2018, Marin Mobile Care is operated Dignity on Wheels, a mobile hygiene service that provides free showers and laundry services to the homeless in 5 counties and 20 cities throughout the Bay Area and Los Angeles. The shower program, which offers a towel, soap and shampoo, helps people alleviate the day-to-day stress of being in survival mode.
Marin Mobile Care’s shower program staff also connects the homeless to resources such as mental health counseling, a bed for the night, medical care, food resources and employment and housing opportunities.
“We already consider this a success and are planning to continue offering the service,” Miles said.
The Fairfax Library parking lot is located at 2097 Sir Francis Drake Blvd. Showers are available from 4 to 7 p.m.
