Ritter Center, a federally qualified health center, announced that Bombas donated 7,500 pairs of their specially designed donation socks to the San Rafael-based nonprofit. These socks will be utilized in all of Ritter Center’s programs, including the food pantry, health clinic and mobile street medicine team that brings medical care to underserved and unserved individuals throughout Marin County.
Bombas is an apparel brand with a mission to help those in need. The company was originally founded in 2013 because socks are the most requested clothing item at homeless shelters, and today sells and donates socks, underwear and T-shirts – the three most requested items.
“Foot wound care is a common issue we treat at Ritter Center. Socks are a major commodity that people experiencing homelessness don’t often have access to, which is why our street medicine van is stocked with socks,” said Mark Shotwell, Ritter Center’s CEO. “Socks help to prevent blisters and cuts on bare feet. Bombas’s generous donation of socks will fill a need for an item in high demand. By addressing a lack of consistent health care access, we can begin the process to re-engage in health and start the journey of lifelong healing.”
Ritter Center serves over 2,700 patients annually in more than 18,000 visits. About 35% of its clients have experienced or are experiencing homelessness. About 65% are precariously housed and receive medical and behavioral healthcare, housing support, food and other essential services.
Over 350 families receive food from Ritter Center’s pantry each week. In 2022, it secured permanent housing for 250 individuals and provided over $567,000 in rental assistance to help people stay housed.
