After months of planning and preparation, 2022 Giving Marin grant recipient Call of the Sea welcomed 12 deaf high school students and their chaperones from the Utah School for the Deaf and Blind on board for a four-day immersive seamanship program in July.

Call of the Sea educators met in advance with the students’ teachers to discuss safety, communications and strategies for non-verbal teaching and learned vital sign language terms for sailing maneuvers and basic communications. While the students did not all know each other in advance, they bonded through the shared experience of overcoming trepidations about being on the water, climbing the rig and sharing life on a boat.  For more information, visit callofthesea.org.
