Cedars, a Marin County-based nonprofit dedicated to supporting individuals with developmental disabilities since 1919, announced its first collaboration with 2023 Giving Marin grant recipient O’Hanlon Center for the Arts to create a new art exhibit, “Breaking Through.”

“We are so pleased to partner with O’Hanlon Center to bring our artists’ work to a new community. Part of our mission is to destigmatize differences, and this show introduces more people to the paintings, drawings and sculptures created by artists with disabilities at Cedars,” said co-Executive Director Cheryl White.

According to White, these works are not only objects to admire for their bold colors but can also be portals into very diverse minds. They give the viewer a glimpse into the fascinations, emotions and perceptions of artists who are breaking through whatever barriers are in their way.

“O’Hanlon Center is thrilled to host a special exhibition of Cedars Artists and grateful for the grant from Giving Marin that allowed us to extend our reach and create an exhibition for this new and amazing group of artists. We invite the community to celebrate the creativity and expression of many Cedars artists,” said Erma Murphy, executive director of O’Hanlon Center for the Arts.

The exhibit features art from 21 Cedars artists in a variety of media. The artwork featured on the show’s poster is by Anna Price, who approaches art-making with joyful confidence. She is as adept at working from her imagination as from a visual reference. When working from a source, she studies it carefully, analyzing its colors and shapes. Her dramatically composed paintings often feature powerful figures with geometrically abstract features and many-fingered hands. Price also expresses her exuberant spirit as a singer, dancer, improv actor and puppeteer.
