The Tivoli Festival at Aldersly in San Rafael was a celebration of Danish culture and heritage. This year’s festival, held Sept. 28, marked the 75th anniversary of the celebration at Aldersly and the first in-person celebration since 2019.
The event featured traditional Danish folk dances by the Northern California Spelmanslag, Viking reenactments by the Vikings of Bjornstad, and the music of Grammy Award-winning violinist Mads Tolling. The festival also offered an
artistic experience with live painting by Lucinda Eubanks and an authentic Danish lunch featuring an array of traditional dishes and desserts. Aldersly, a nonprofit life plan community in San Rafael, was originally established by Danish immigrants in 1921 as a nonprofit retirement community. The modern Aldersly still adheres to the way of life its Danish founders called “hygge” – a feeling of comfort, positivity and well-being. To learn more about Aldersly, visit aldersly.org.
