Students at Terra Linda
High School in San Rafael participated this fall in “Money Matters: Budgeting for College,” an interactive financial aid literacy curriculum designed by 10,000 Degrees for high school students.

Participating students juggled set budgets and flexible pricing for day-to-day expenses. Students rotated between stations — staffed by volunteers and 10,000 Degrees teams — and were challenged to make difficult budgeting decisions, including being encouraged to spend more than they should on products and services they more than likely will not need.

Students learned the power of a college education and its impact on their career and long- term financial success, and that through their decision-making college is possible by accessing free financial aid and thoughtful choices.

The program highlights the importance of submitting a financial aid application (FAFSA/CADA) and how financial aid plays a role in reducing out-of-pocket costs. Students grew their advocacy skills by discovering what steps they need to take to find additional financial resources.
