More than 500 Marin County high school students participated in Poetry Out Loud, a national arts education program that encourages the study of great poetry by offering free educational materials and a dynamic recitation competition.
On Feb. 8 at the Marin County Poetry Out Loud High School Finals at the Marin Center, four students were selected as finalists:
• First place, Sierra Pearson, Tamalpais High School
• Second place, Juno Phipps, Novato High School
• Third place, Sareena Kumar, Branson School
• Fourth place, Frances Sveinson, Marin School of The Arts
The Marin Cultural Association is a local partner for Poetry Out Loud, organizing the program in Marin County schools and hosting the county finals competition.
“We are grateful for the ongoing support of the California Arts Council and National Endowment for the Arts which makes this inspiring program possible each year,” said Tracy Bays-Boothe, managing director of the Marin Cultural Association.
Poetry Out Loud helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence and learn about literary history and contemporary life. An initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts, Poetry Out Loud is administered statewide by the California Arts Council.
Pearson will represent Marin County in the state finals in Sacramento for a chance to proceed to the national finals in Washington, D.C. May 5-7.
