The Strawberry Seals Swim Team officially approved the continuation of its impactful partnership with 2024 Giving Marin grant recipient Soma Aquatics Foundation to support free summer learn-to-swim programming
for youth from Play Marin. The five-week program will be hosted at Tamalpais High School, with pool space donated by the Tamalpais Union High School District.

This partnership, now entering its fourth summer, will join community organizations to ensure equitable access to water safety and swim instruction. The Strawberry Seals Swim Team will once again provide key financial support, while Soma Aquatics Foundation will lead all programming, training, staffing and logistics — including certified lifeguards and trained volunteer instructors.

The decision was announced following a presentation to the Seals Board of Directors led by Soma high school supervisors Ann Kilgore and Amelia “Layney” Octavio. Both young leaders shared powerful reflections on their journeys through the aquatics world and the deep sense of purpose they’ve found in giving back through swim instruction. Their stories underscored the lasting impact this program has on both instructors and participants, Soma Aquatics Foundation said. The program will serve over 80 youth from the Marin City Summer Camp at Play Marin offering instruction in water safety, beginner swim techniques and continued swim development for ages 4 and up. In addition to structured lessons, participants will benefit from supervised pool access throughout the summer.

“This program is about more than swimming,” said Jeremy Engman, executive director of Soma Aquatics Foundation. “It’s about building confidence, community and joy in a safe and supportive environment. We’re incredibly grateful to the Strawberry Seals, Tamalpais High School and Play Marin for believing in this mission and working together to make it possible.”
