Southern Marin Fire Department Station 1 hosted nine students and two adult chaperones from Sausalito sister city Sakaide, Japan on July 31 as part of the ongoing cultural exchange program. The delegation was welcomed by Day Capt. Keith Schellin, interpreter Kayo Schellin and youth Associate Day Capts. Kit Kulina and Tony Valverde. Students took a station tour and experienced hands-on demonstrations of firefighting equipment and an emergency preparedness presentation led by Leah Curtis, the department’s preparedness and education coordinator. They also heard from Battalion Chief Jon Butler and Station 1 Engineer Tahoe Boaz — part of the original 1989 Sausalito delegation to Sakaide — who shared insights on public safety and community service. The visit concluded with a tour of the Sausalito Police Department.
