The Marin County Probation Department marked the 10th anniversary of its Career Explorer Program, a transformative initiative that organizers say has opened doors for hundreds of local youth. What began a decade ago with just 15 to 20 interns has grown into a countywide program that serves more than 50 interns annually. “This milestone is more than just a number — it’s a testament to the lasting impact of investing in our youth,” said Marlon Washington, chief probation officer. “The Career Explorer Program has opened doors, built confidence and created pathways to public service and meaningful careers.” Fueled by strong partnerships with County of Marin departments and community-based organizations, the Explorers program provides youth, many facing barriers to employment, with real-world experience, professional connections and a deeper understanding of the public sector. “The Career Explorer Program is more than just a summer internship — it’s an opportunity to gain insight into the public sector,” said Yanira Gonzalez, a Career Explorer intern. “When I first joined the department, my knowledge was limited, but each day I gained a deeper understanding of the importance of integrity, leadership and, most importantly, community service.” The program began with a two-week orientation that included work-readiness workshops highlighting résumé writing, interview preparation and public speaking. Soft skills workshops focused on professionalism, communication skills and workplace expectations.
