Schurig Center for Brain Injury Recovery, Marin’s only nonprofit dedicated to helping people thrive after a brain injury, concussion or stroke, presents The Inside/Out Project – community art project that sheds light on the often-misunderstood experience of living with the effects of brain injury. The Art Therapy Program offered at Schurig Center helps brain injury survivors process feelings about emotional and physical trauma, while aiming to reduce stress and improve overall emotional well-being.
The Inside/Out Project provides brain injury survivors with an artistic outlet to explore and share their inner realities. Through the creation of hand-decorated masks and written artist’s statements, participants illustrate the contrast between how they believe others perceive them on the outside and how they experience themselves on the inside. Each mask is a personal reflection. “Art has the power to reveal truths that words alone cannot capture,” said Midge Casler, director of Schurig Center’s art program. “The Inside/Out Project allows brain injury survivors to share their inner journeys with honesty and creativity. It offers a window into the courage, resilience and humanity behind each person’s story.” Schurig Center invites the community to engage with The Inside/Out Project. A video slideshow presentation featuring masks from the project is available for viewing online at schurigcenter.org/inside-out. Those interested in hosting an exhibition may contact the Schurig Center office at 415-461- 6771 or info@schurigcenter.org.
