NEW LEARNING LAB EXCITES READERS

The Book Exchange’s new space helps student visitors get excited about reading.

This past fall, The Book Exchange of Marin launched a new feature for the local students who visit on field trips — The Learning Lab. The organization turned a crowded storage room into a bright, welcoming space where students from underserved communities can discover the joy of reading.

Freshly painted walls, new chairs and tables and a large interactive screen now welcome students. Additionally, to help students understand the difference between fiction and nonfiction while expanding their reading interests, The Book Exchange commissioned an educational mural for the new space by local artist and muralist Andrea Flores.

Students who visit The Book Exchange choose 10 free books

to take home. The Learning Lab has added a short video called “Reading Is Your Superpower” to highlight the variety of books available to them —mysteries, adventures, graphic novels, biographies, fantasies and more.

“The video reminds students that there’s a book for every interest,” said Bruce Burtch, board president of The Book Exchange of Marin. “It also challenges students to step outside their comfort zone and try something new.”

After the video, students participate in an interactive game to practice identifying different types of books and discover fresh genres they might not have considered.

The lab and video were underwritten by a grant from the Jolson Family Foundation in San Rafael.

“We were thrilled to have the opportunity to help establish the new Learning Lab at The Book Exchange,” Joe Jolson said. “We hope everyone enjoys it for many years to come.”
