10,000 DEGREES HOSTS FIRST LADY

10,000 Degrees, an organization dedicated to empowering students to graduate college in Marin and six other Bay Area counties, celebrated its 40th anniversary with the ONE Amazing Community virtual gala on April 24. The event raised $1.1 million and had more than 700 viewers. First Lady of the United States Dr. Jill Biden (above, top) spoke about the impact of the organization, and state Sen. Mike McGuire (above, middle) hosted the event. Dr. Thomas Peters, president and CEO of Marin Community Foundation, was honored for his decades-long contributions to 10,000 Degrees. Jordan Panana Carbajal, (above, bottom) a 10,000 Degrees alumnus and current legislative aide for the California State Assembly, joined the festivities as an example of the success of the program. National Salvation Army Week, May 10-15, was celebrated by the San Rafael Corps by highlighting its volunteers in Marin who run the weekly food pantry. In a single month, The Salvation Army distributes more than 18,000 pounds of food in partnership with the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank to serve our neighbors who struggle with food insecurity.  -Photos courtesy of Salvation Army

On May 29, the Marin Museum of Contemporary Art will open “conVERGEnce juried by Susan Snyder. The show will feature how artists investigate coming together, or coming apart, in their practice during this time of extraordinary flux. More than 60 artists from around the country who explore the theme in innovative, expressive ways through a variety of mediums will be on display through July 18. Museum hours are Wednesday-Friday, 11 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.  It’s free and no appointment is required.
