PNOC OPENS DOORS TO THERAPY TRIALS, HOPE

In 2010, Bruce and Allyn Campbell’s son George started experiencing morning headaches and nausea. He was diagnosed with a brain tumor — an ependymoma — the size of a small orange, located on the right side of his brain. Ten hours of surgery, 31 sessions of radiation therapy and seven years after his diagnosis, George Campbell is healthy and thriving.

Bruce and Allyn Campbell started the PNOC Foundation, a 2021 Giving Marin grant recipient, to support the work of the Pacific Pediatric Neuro-Oncology Consortium, an organization dedicated to bringing new therapies to children and young adults with brain tumors.

“Brain cancer is the deadliest cancer for children, but there is no standard of care yet. That’s why PNOC’s clinical trials are so critically needed,” Allyn Campbell said.

This year PNOC opened seven new clinical trials at 29 different locations across the United States and around the world.

Investigators from more than 43 institutions that make up PNOC continue to participate and meet to bring forward their best ideas and strategies for research. Collaborating teams share data, analyze their findings and share resources.

“The $5,000 Giving Marin grant went directly toward funding patient enrollment in these trials. We were able to add an additional 110 kids in 2022,” Bruce Campbell said.

Since its inception in 2013, PNOC has provided 27 clinical trial opportunities for 775 children.

PNOC’s work to date has been primarily funded by philanthropy and the support of community minded individuals, businesses and institutions. For more information, visit pnocfoundation.org.
