More than 200 guests gathered at the Corinthian Yacht Club in Tiburon on Aug. 22 to celebrate the first high school uniquely dedicated to the education of the Santal tribe in Gurap, West Bengal India — about 40 miles from Mother Teresa’s home in Kolkata.

According to Marin-based Tribe Rising India, the Santals, an indigenous people of India with a population of over 10 million, have been denied access to safe and consistent educational opportunities for generations.
“Our donor gifts are more than financial assistance, they are a testament to how much our supporters value education and the dignity of all people,” said Annette Venables, co-founder and president of Tribe Rising.
“That positive energy, love and hope filled the room and filled our hearts.”
