Audrey Lowell, a senior at Tamalpais High School, has been awarded The Congressional Award Gold Medal – Congress’ highest honor for
civilian youth. This medal honors youth for their commitment to voluntary public service, as well as personal development and physical fitness.
Any interested, motivated student, ages 14-24, can participate in the Congressional Award by setting and achieving individually challenging
goals in four program areas: Voluntary Public Service, Personal Development, Physical Fitness and Expedition/Exploration.
To meet the volunteer hours requirement, Lowell clocked more than 400 volunteer hours at Food Picked with Love, a teen organization she founded dedicated to sourcing food from neighborhood gardens for food pantries. Food Picked with Love has donated 5,800 pounds of food to a local pantry that serves food-insecure community members.
In terms of personal development and physical fitness, Lowell achieved full fluency in German and met personal swimming goals. Meeting the expedition/exploration goal led Lowell to head up a historical trip on the origins of American government and culture. She and her group traveled to Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia, visiting early American landmarks and museums. “I am grateful for the skills I have learned throughout the Congressional Award experience and encourage all young people to get involved with the program,” Lowell said. “Participating in the Congressional Award program has taught me to be resilient, embrace opportunity, and welcome challenges.”
