A 50th anniversary celebration for Homeward Bound of Marin at Mill Valley Community Center on Sept. 22 honored five decades of partnership to solve homelessness. The evening included music, a proclamation presented by Congressman Jared Huffman, a lively auction and speakers who shared their stories of change.
A three-course meal was prepared and served for 250 guests by Homeward Bound’s culinary team, which includes graduates of the job-training program at Fresh Starts Culinary Academy. Guests left with a goodie bag of items from the Halo line of gourmet products produced by chefs and graduates in the Homeward Bound kitchen.
What began as a shelter for four families, Homeward Bound now operates five shelter programs and 13 supportive housing programs that serve families, veterans, seniors, people with mental health challenges and others working to overcome homelessness.
All funds raised from the event will support the launch of 50 new homes for people transitioning out of homelessness. Construction is nearly complete for the buildings that serve veterans as well as families and adults returning to the workforce.
