GRANTS ADVANCE FOOD ACCESSIBILITY

In a strengthening of Marin County food systems, three local nonprofits — the Agricultural Institute of Marin, ExtraFood, and Ritter Center — jointly announced they were selected as recipients of the Healthy Refrigeration Grant Program awards, administered by the California Department of Food and Agriculture Farm to Fork Office. The local organizations were recognized among 103 projects that promote access to healthy foods in underserved communities while promoting California-grown agriculture.

ExtraFood will use its grant award to provide 37 refrigeration units to 22 food distribution partner sites as well as their facility. With additional refrigeration and freezer space, ExtraFood will reach over 25,000 food-insecure people living in Marin, Sonoma and San Francisco counties and increase equitable access to healthy fresh food in the community.

“In the pursuit of our mission to fight hunger and prevent wasted food, we are thrilled to
be a part of this generous grant. This transformative support catalyzes us to amplify our efforts to alleviate hunger, prevent perfectly good food from being wasted, and create positive change in our community,” said Will Dittmar, ExtraFood executive director.

ExtraFood recently delivered a refrigerator to Karma Club, the free teen community space at Northgate mall in San Rafael as part of the grant with the CDFA.

“This refrigerator is a game- changer for our free food store. It allows us to safely store
more fresh, nutritious food and significantly expand our ability to serve teens, their families, and the community who rely on Karma Club for basic needs support,” said Sally Newson, Karma Club executive director. “Every day, we see firsthand how access to healthy food impacts students’ ability to focus, learn and thrive — and this donation directly strengthens that mission.”
