Marin County’s older adults enjoyed a day of discovery, learning and connection at the Rotary Epic Day of Service for Older Adults on May 16, at Children’s Island at the Marin Center.

Visitors explored a range of resources designed to support healthy, engaged and connected aging. Attendees had the opportunity to experience the autonomous driving features of a Tesla, learn about the Marin Parks Terrain Hopper — an adaptive mobility device that helps adults with disabilities enjoy outdoor recreation — explore opportunities to participate in clinical trials at the Buck Institute for Research on Aging, discover lifelong learning programs through Emeritus Students College of Marin and learn about the many services offered by Vivalon.

According to the 2024 Marin County Older Adult Needs Assessment, more than 30% of Marin County residents are aged 60 or older.

Cherie Sorokin, president of Marin Villages and a member of the Rotary Club of Tiburon Sunset, said Marin Villages was pleased to participate in and sponsor the event.

“I think, like Marin Villages, many smaller nonprofits serving older adults really appreciate opportunities to showcase
what they offer as Rotary made possible,” Sorokin said. “Aging and services for older adults are topics that benefit from ongoing community engagement, and each event tends to reach a slightly different audience.”

Event coordinator Sylvia Barry, a member of the Rotary Club of Novato Sunrise, thanked the sponsors and more than 30 exhibitors for helping make this inaugural event a success. She shared that the event generated enthusiastic feedback from attendees and the diverse group of exhibitors. Visitors appreciated the opportunity to learn about community resources, while exhibitors welcomed conversations with a steady stream of participants.

“This event exceeded expectations and is an excellent start for a first-year effort,” Barry said. “It will continue to grow from here and has been an overwhelmingly positive experience for everyone involved.”
