Community Action Marin marked its 60th anniversary on May 29 at Step Up Marin!, the agency’s annual signature fundraising event. More than 200 supporters, partners and community members gathered to learn about Community Action Marin’s ongoing work to address both the causes and consequences of poverty through community-responsive services, advocacy initiatives and systems change.
Author and keynote speaker Anne Lamott inspired attendees with a call to care for one another and remain connected to our shared humanity, even when the work is difficult. Community Courage Award recipient Atenea Portillo-Hernandez shared her story of perseverance and the bright future she has built with determination and community support.
Founded in 1966, Community Action Marin is an anti-poverty movement-building nonprofit that helps people throughout Marin County achieve well-being and hope. Every day, people of low income across Marin access nutritious food, stable housing, free and affordable early education, workforce opportunities and wraparound programs that help create lasting stability.
Beyond direct services, Community Action Marin is working to shift narratives about the face of poverty and advance policies and systems that expand opportunity for all.
