Vivalon partners provide strength, balance awareness
Vivalon’s Healthy Aging Campus in San Rafael brought older adults and community members together Sept. 22-25 for Falls Prevention Awareness Week, a series of free programs focused on strength, balance, confidence and healthy aging.
The week featured strength and balance classes, fall-risk assessments, practical demonstrations and conversations with Marin County health and safety experts. Speakers examined falls from several perspectives, including countywide trends, emergency response and hospital care.
Bria Larson of the Marin County Department of Health and Human Services shared findings from a three-year analysis of falls in Marin County. San Rafael Battalion Chief Jason Hatfield discussed what happens when first responders arrive after a fall, while registered nurse Jessica Lacanlale of MarinHealth offered insight into hospital and trauma care.
Experts from MarinHealth and Kaiser Permanente also discussed factors that can affect fall risk and recovery, including medications, foot health, strength, balance and rehabilitation. The conversation was moderated by Kris Rebillot of the Buck Institute for Research on Aging.
Although Falls Prevention Awareness Week has come to an end, Vivalon encourages older adults to keep moving, stay active and take advantage of programs that promote strength, balance, healthy aging and independence year-round.
Vivalon offers evidence-based health and wellness programs throughout the year. Classes include A Matter of Balance, Strength in Balance, Tai Chi and QiGong for Falls Prevention, Ballet Concepts for Strength and Balance, and other classes designed to support strength, balance and overall well-being.
