NONPROFITS RALLY VOLUNTEERS, FUNDRAISING

San Rafael-based Center for Volunteer & Nonprofit Leadership partnered with the Home Depot Foundation, California Department of Veterans Affairs, Habitat for Humanity Napa Solano and the Tug McGraw Foundation to engage more than 300 volunteers in a day of service to benefit more than 900 veterans at the California Veterans Home Yountville, the largest veterans home in the United States.. The April 26 project brought together volunteers to build furniture, shade structures, planter boxes and to spruce up the gardens.

Six dorm kitchen areas were remodeled to be handicapped accessible, including replacing appliances, cabinetry, sinks, flooring, and countertops. A six-bedroom home was framed for use by six homeless vets for a Habitat for Humanity project in Dixon (above), a batting cage was built for the Mixed Nuts veterans baseball team to practice, and volunteers constructed a chicken coop for the garden (right). Since 1964, the national award-winning Center for Volunteer & Nonprofit Leadership has advanced nonprofits and volunteerism by strengthening leadership, encouraging innovation, and empowering individuals throughout the Bay Area.  -Photos courtesy of Center for Volunteer & Nonprofit Leadership
