Buckelew Programs will present Bike + Hike 4 Buckelew, on May 9 at Miwok Meadows in China Camp State Park in San Rafael.

Now in its fifth year as a Marin County outdoor event for mental health, suicide prevention and substance use services, Bike + Hike 4 Buckelew brings together cyclists, hikers, yogis, families and nature lovers for a day that is equal parts celebration and purpose. Bike + Hike 4 Buckelew aims to offer a joyful antidote to the silence and stigma that too often surround mental health needs.

This year’s event reflects the community roots Bike + Hike 4 Buckelew has grown over five years, organizers said. The San Rafael High School Bike Dawgs and Tam High Mountain Bike Race Team will return as ride guides, joined for the first time by the San Rafael Hiking Club, leading nature walks. Coaches and riders from the Little Bellas, a nonprofit building confidence in young women through mountain biking, will lead a family-friendly ride.

For those who want to see China Camp through entirely new eyes, a limited-enrollment ecologist-led hike guided
by Professor Sarah Swope (ecology and evolutionary biology) and certified botanist Sam Abercrombie will reveal the native plants, birds and biodiversity of Marin.

Every registered guest will receive a limited-edition hat designed for Bike + Hike 4 Buckelew by well-known Marin creator Tommy Breeze.

This year, Bike + Hike 4 Buckelew will present its Trailblazer Awards to four supporters who have been with the organization since day one: San Rafael High School Bike Dawgs, Tam High Mountain Bike Race Team, the Marin Museum of Bicycling, and volunteer Laurie Pedersen.

The full day will include guided rides and hikes for all skill levels, morning yoga in the meadow, a gourmet breakfast, a paella lunch, and live music from the Heavy Hitterz.
