Tech Trek Marin, a summer science and technology camp for middle school girls, celebrated the completion of the 2026 program and the next generation of STEM women on Sept. 12 at the Marin Bocce Federation Rose Garden in downtown San Rafael.
Tech Trek Marin is part of a national program offering an immersive week-long science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) summer camp coordinated and funded by the American Association of University Women. The program offers seventh-grade girls an opportunity to explore STEM fields in which women are underrepresented.
“Tech Trek is more than just learning about STEM fields. It’s about providing girls who have an interest in math and science a sense of belonging to a larger community of like-minded women,” said Angela Nuckles, AAUW Marin Tech Trek coordinator. “The camp experience helps build self-esteem and by interacting with women role models they develop the confidence to think, ‘Hey, maybe I can do that.’”
Tech Trek Marin 2026 was held at Sonoma State and Santa Clara universities, where the girls lived in dormitories for the week of coursework, giving campers a taste of college life. Attendees chose different tracks to explore including engineering, chemistry, robotics, forensics, botany and environmental science. In addition, there were community building activities such as building a newspaper structure.
During the celebration, each of the 2026 campers, representing nine Marin middle schools, talked about their experience. Recurring themes included appreciation of the in-depth exposure to STEM disciplines, hands-on experiences, interacting with STEM professionals and the camaraderie of like-minded girls.
